Description

Sir Henry Thompson, Bart, (1820-1904). The picture was painted in 1874 while travelling in France and Switzerland, he was accompanied by the watercolourist David Hall McKewan. The catholic church of Saint Michel was constructed in 1709 and is located in the French department of Haute-Savoie, in the town of Chamonix.

More relevant to his profession and in the same year, an article in the Contemporary Review drew Thompson’s attention to cremation. It was in 1874, and chiefly by Thompson’s energy, that a Cremation Society was founded in England. From that time onwards he was its President and did all in his power to promote the practice both here and on the Continent.
