John F. Campbell was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire in 1885 and was active as an illustrator in the UK between 1909 and 1930. He illustrated several children's adventure books. including 'Heroes of Modern Crusades' by Edward Gilliatt (London: Seeley & Co., 1909); 'Heroes of the Elizabethan Age' by Edward Gilliatt (London: Seeley & Co., 1911); 'Under King Henry's Banners' by Percy Westerman (London: Pilgrim Press, 1914); 'The Black Arrow' by Robert Louis Stevenson (London: Cassell, 1915); and Heroes of the Indian Mutiny' by Edward Gilliatt (London: Seeley & Co., 1918).
He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1913.
The Census of 1911 gives his address as 19 Wilton Road, Muswell Hill, London. He died in Hastings, Sussex in 1966
