Description

David Cox painted hayfield scenes throughout his career, in particular of the 1830’s. He painted large and ambitious versions of the subject together with smaller works which would sometimes help to make up the numbers of his contributions to the SPWC (Society of Painters in Watercolours). The present watercolour is small and unsigned and may have been a sketch or study for a larger work.

A pencil signature (E C or E L Williams?) on the back of the drawing is thought to be a previous owner.
