Description

In August and September 1834 George went abroad for six weeks, going up the Rhine with his brother Tom. Here he ‘made many sketches and took in a great deal of health in the most enjoyable tour’. From Mannheim, he wrote to Julia, saying how much he was missing her, and begging her to write and tell him about herself, and saying how much he was looking forward to their reunion. The trip from Rotterdam to Cologne, he said, was flat and uninteresting, but thereafter all was interesting. He encountered some passport difficulties, and sent a message for Palmer: ‘Tell Palmer if you see him that this must be his marriage trip but that he must get at least 3 passports as his bewilderment from so many causes would lead him to a prison.
