Description
Unfinished watercolour painted in the style of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the head in this portrait has been executed with great skill and is highly finished while the rest of the picture remains incomplete. Whether the outcome was intentional or not is unclear but without a signature, we can assume the portrait was work in progress, however, the picture is delightful and stands alone as a delicate and haunting image.
The artist Sir John Everett Millais painted a small number of compositional studies related to our subject, two of his watercolours show a young woman looking out of a window, with the titles “A Dream of Dawn” 1868, and “Reverie” 1868, (Reverie meaning – a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream).
